Our Music Captains

At St Paul’s we have a system of Music Captains in both the Junior and Senior Schools. It is the role of each Music Captain to assist teachers who specialise in their area, to mentor younger students, to emcee performances and organise events that allow Music students of all ages to socialise together.

Our Music Captains for 2019 are…

Jessica Baldwin – Executive Music Captain

Jessica has been part of the St Paul’s music program since 2012 when she started learning flute, in 2013, she played tuba in the year 5 band program before returning to flute the next year. She has progressed through the bands, playing in Wind Band and Concert Band for a number of years and now plays in Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Jessica has also taken part in a number of choirs throughout her time at St Paul’s and was Junior School Choral Captain in year 6. Jessica is currently completing her Certificate in Music Technology and enjoys spending time mentoring younger bands. “It is an honour to be Music Captain for 2019 and I am looking forward to working alongside such amazing people and talented musicians.”

Zackary Keleher – Executive Music Captain 2019

Zackary Keleher, 2019 Music captain has been a musician since when he started piano in grade 2. From then on he has gone on to consume almost everything the music centre has to offer, from trying strings in grade three, to trying sax for the wind program in grade 5, to moving into percussion in senior school and most recently singing and joining choirs. Zack is a fan of all music but really enjoys Jazz. His goal this year is to complete AMEB grade 8 piano for leisure and is aiming to attend the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, after he finishes his final year. As Zack has grown older and his passion for music has exploded, he hopes that whenever people see him perform, that he impacts on them, making them feel better, dance a little, and remember that one bushy-haired kid that was smiling while playing.

Jamie Milios – Strings Captain

James, who plays the violin, began his music career in Grade 3, with the Year 3 Strings Ensemble. Over the years, James has been a member of multiple music ensembles, including Andante Strings, Vivace Strings, Senior Strings, Symphony Orchestra and is currently in Vivo Strings. James also played the clarinet in the Year 5 Band, but didn’t enjoy it as much as the violin. James doesn’t like to play slow, sad music but enjoys fast, up-beat music, even if he struggles at first. He hopes to continue on in his role as Strings Captain in 2020 and mentor up-and-coming musicians at St. Paul’s. When he graduates in 2020, he hopes to continue playing the violin.

Ella Evans – Band Captain

Ella has been involved with the St Paul’s Music department since 2014. Learning the tenor saxophone and vocals, Ella has taken part in many ensembles over the years, including; choirs, jazz ensembles and concert ensembles. She also toured with the Wind Ensemble to Hawaii to play at the Pacific Basin Music Festival in 2016. In her role as Band Captain, Ella will organise mentoring, tune the band and hopefully do some conducting work. After graduation Ella plans to continue saxophone on the side while pursuing a career in the general area of design, because “I don’t know what I want to do yet”.

Misha Kokoschko – Jazz Captain

Misha began playing trumpet in year 5 (2013) and has been involved with the St Paul’s music department since 2015. Over the years Misha has been a member of a range of ensembles at St Paul’s School, including Big Band, Wind Ensemble, and during years 7 and 8, a member of the Middle School Choir. Misha has had the opportunity to experiment with a variety of musical instruments and is currently playing at an AMEB grade 6 level for trumpet. He enjoys listening to a medley of music genres; from Jazz to the Hamilton soundtrack. “It is my privilege and an honour to serve the Music department and student body alongside my fellow music leaders; some of the finest musicians and people I have the pleasure of knowing and working alongside.”

Max Brewster – Music Tech Captain

Max Brewster has been an enthusiastic member of music since he started back in grade one. He has always been part of something within music and has enjoyed it immensely. Back at his old school (McDowall state School), he was a part of the Wind Ensemble, Choir and Boys Choir. This then continued on to current day, where Max is yet to lose excitement within music. Max picked up playing guitar in grade 8 and continues to play and now sing. When the Music Technology subject came along, it was no surprise that Max jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it. He loved his work and his responsibilities within Music Tech that he applied for the captaincy role for the subject. Max hopes that even though he is now the Captain of Music Tech, his pupils still see him as the kind, friendly and funny guy he has always been.

Josh Phillips – Choral Captain

Josh has taken part in the music program at St Paul’s since he started at the school in 2014 but has been singing in choirs for 11 years. As Choral Captain, he has the responsibility to help organise rehearsals and mentor as well as support all choristers at St Paul’s. “Singing in Choirs makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger.” Josh has been a part of St Paul’s Chorale, Senior Choir, Boys Night and Auditioned Choir. He also belongs to ‘Voices of Birralee’, an Award winning choir organisation with which he has toured around Australia and Europe. He has also been playing piano for 9 years.

Timothy Wright – Drum Tech Captain

Tim has been an enthusiastic member of the St Paul’s Music Department since year 7. During this time he has participated as a percussionist for Wind Band, Concert Band, Worship Band, Percussion Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. Tim looks forward each week to his drum lessons with the amazing Mr Cotgreave, which has seen him thrive. Tim was part of 2018’s Anzac Day events (Wind Ensemble) and the school’s solo competition (2nd place, Senior School). He loves being a part of the music team. It is this and his passion and drive for drumming, that initiated the role of Drum Tech Captain. As Drum Tech Captain, Tim hopes to provide support to his fellow musicians as well as being a mentor to the younger percussion students in the music program. Tim spends his down time drumming along to music of the Beatles, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Let the Drum Battles begin!
