Introducing our 2024 Music Captains…
Gordon Tang – Executive Music Captain
Gordon developed his passion for music during his kindergarten years when he was first introduced to percussion. Since then, he has developed skills to play other instruments such as the drum kit, piano, oboe
and singing. However, his first love has always been the violin, which he has played since Year 1. Gordon has been active in the St Paul’s community since day one when he joined the school in Year 6. This is shown through the participation in Vivo Strings, Symphony Orchestra, St Paul’s Chorus, St Paul’s Singers, Percussion Ensemble and also Big Band in 2024. He is hoping to pursue music in the future and will be auditioning for Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium on classical violin to study in 2025.
Matilda Semmler – Executive Music Captain
Matilda has always been heavily involved in music through her family for as long as she can remember. In Year 4, she picked up the saxophone, playing in the Wooloowin Concert Band. Since arriving at St Paul’s in
Year 5, she has learnt many instruments including guitar, bass guitar, and drums which can be seen in her many Battle of the Bands experiences. Matilda is currently involved in Wind Ensemble, Big Band, St Paul’s Chorus and St Paul’s Singers. She is also currently pursuing a Certificate III in Music Industries as a subject in Year 12. In this course, Matilda as well as a few other students, run the behind the scenes of all performances and assemblies.
Jemma Cross – Strings Captain
Jemma has excelled in music since a young age, beginning violin as her main instrument in just grade 2. Besides violin she also can play piano, clarinet, drums and bass guitar. Jemma joined St Pauls in Year 10
and since then she has been in the Vivo Strings and Symphony Orchestra. She also participates in MBSO, which is an outside of school orchestra run by Mrs Gibbs, who is also the Head of Strings at St Pauls. As well as being in many ensembles and orchestras, Jemma also is completing a Certificate III in Music Technology as well as taking both Music and Music Extension as Year 12 subjects.
Coby Watson – Jazz Captain
Coby is a bass and electric guitarist. He performs as a member in the Big Band, Wind Ensemble, Electric
Guitar Ensemble, and Friday Afternoon Jazz. Coby has always had a passion for music, particularly the bass guitar, and has been an avid member in the Music centre since he started at St. Paul’s School in Year 7.
Layla Heard – Choral Captain
Layla has been engaging in music from the age of 8 and started playing the flute in Year 3. Since then, she has played around with various amounts of instruments which include guitar and bass guitar. Even though
she has strong love for song writing and singing, Layla has explored different instruments through class music and Battle of the Bands. Layla has been an enthusiastic member in the St Paul’s Music department since Year 7. She began by joining St Paul’s Chorus and Concert Band, and now she can be found in Wind Ensemble, St Paul’s Chorus and St Paul’s Singers.
Jackson Toye – Band Captain
Jackson started his music journey in Year 4 at Bald Hills State School when he was given the clarinet. He mistakenly wrote “flute” on the instrument selection form, thinking that’s what a clarinet was called.
Fortunately, he couldn’t play the flute, so he ended up with a clarinet instead. After a few years of playing, Jackson started composing music in a composition book, a passion he still has today. Throughout high school, he has only played the clarinet. Currently, he plays in both the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. He spends a lot of time in the music centre studying Music, Music Extension (Composition), and Music Technology, and he was chosen as this year’s Band Captain.
Jadyn Morgan – Music Tech Captain
Jadyn has had a love for music ever since he was taught how to use his habit of tapping to pursue percussion as an instrument, starting in the Year 3. He then started to learn piano and music theory in the
Year 5 and now enjoys composing music under the tutelage of Mr. Fowler (St Paul’s Composition Tutor). Jadyn has been an active participant in the school’s music program since joining in the Year 7, and can be found in Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Worship Band, and running around at all the school performances.
